Egils
Purmalis is an oncology surgeon with over 25 years of professional experience
in the field of oncology.
During
this time he has performed over 5,000 operations. Already in the late eighties,
surgeon Egils Purmalis was one of the first in Latvia to begin the practical
implementation of surgical approaches preserving the breast in cases of breast
cancer. The use of preservation surgery in oncology, especially in cases of
diseases of the mammary glands, significantly reduces the psychological barrier
for many patients with breast cancer. Dr. E. Purmalis is someone who adopted
the approach of psychological risk reduction in breast surgery.
Dr.
Purmalis actively supports breast mammography and ultrasound screening; he is
one of the pioneer surgeons in Latvia for sentinel node surgery. The second
area of oncology Dr. Purmalis is engaged in is malignant skin melanoma and its
surgical treatment.
This
experienced surgeon was involved in an international study, within the
Scandinavian countries, for treatment of melanoma.
He
is an active member of the Associations of Oncology and Surgery, as well as,
the Association for Breast Diseases, and is also a member of the Latvian
Physicians’ Association.
Dr.
Purmalis participates in international projects and attends congresses
worldwide on a regular basis.
He
is one of the founders of the “Choose a doctor!” campaign initiated by “Ieva”
magazine, a publication of the “Santa” Publishing House.
Egils
Purmalis was born in Riga on September 10, 1958.
In
1982 he graduated from the Clinical Department of the Riga Medical Institute;
from
1991 to the present, he was an oncology surgeon at the Latvian Oncology Center
of the Riga City Eastern Clinical University Hospital (SIA Rīgas Austrumu klīniskā universitātes slimnīca - RAKUS);
from
2004 to the present, he also maintained a private practice “E.Purmalis, an
oncology surgeon,” at the JSC “ARS”.
From
2000 to 2007, he was vice-president of the “Foundation for Women's Health.”
From
1984 to 1991 he worked as an oncology surgeon at the Riga City Oncology Health
Center (Oncologic Dispensary).
From
1982 to 1984 he worked as an oncologist in the Tukums District Central Hospital
in Latvia (Tukuma RCS).
As
of February 2011, when the Breast Surgery Department was established at the
Latvian Oncology Center, Dr.Purmalis works as a specialist at the Center,
helping his patients maximally regain their physical health and restore the
level of their psychological comfort as fast as possible. His love of patients
and high professional expertise are helping Dr. Purmalis reach this goal.
